From: ag311@cleveland.Freenet.Edu (Carol Conti-Entin)
Subject: (A) DeskWriter/Classic II/System 7: Thanks & Summary
To recap: I had asked how to get a DeskWriter purchased in 1990 to work
consistently [without "Datacomm buffer overrun - no DTR handshaking" error
messages] with a Classic II running System 7.0.1. I had downloaded version
4.0 drivers, but the README indicated too much old software wouldn't work.
As of this writing, thirteen people, many veterans of a similar ordeal,
have shared their wisdom with me. In chronological order they are: Marc
Bizer, Dwight Lemke, Kathy Graff, Povl H. Pedersen, Chris Monster, David
Anderson, Milton H. Hodge, Michael J. Kobb, Jay L. Cross, Daniel J.
Hofferth, Eric Hoffmann, Dennis D. Davison, and Sridar Narayanan. Thanks!
Several people suggested DeskWriter driver version 3.1 as the best trade-
off among compatibility with System 7, relative lack of bugs, and compati-
bility with old software. I tried it, and it worked! (Others suggested
versions as early as 2.2 would work with System 7, although someone else
said nothing before version 3 would work.)
A few people specified that the culprit is a timing problem. Suggested
solutions (besides a change of driver) were: switching from serial to
AppleTalk and/or changing the 32-bit addressing setting. [The driver's
README indicates 32-bit addressing and Virtual Memory must be either both
ON or both OFF]. I didn't need to try these changes, so I can't say how
much difference they make.

Subject: [Q] Apple HD SC Setup trouble?
Hi netters :-)
I have a problem with the Apple HD SC Setup supplied with the Hardware System
Update 2.0. When trying to update my harddisk driver (I have a Mac
Classic) the program simply crashes with an error message: address error! I
have restarted the mac from a system disk - so that isn't the problem and I
know that the Apple HD SC Setup that I have works - because it updated the
harddisk driver on a Mac IIsi.
Does anyone know why this happens and/or how I can make it work?
Please help - I'm out of ideas

Subject: Apple Contract Woes
I just learned today that our university's HEPP II contract will
go by the wayside at the end of this month. According to our Computing
Services folks, Apple will only renew the contract if the university agrees
to keep a very large stock of inventory on hand. Apparently, state
regulations (ours is a state university) do not allow the university
to keep large inventories in stock. So we've reached an impasse and
it appears that the Apple contract and campus Mac users are the victims.
I'm curious. Have others encountered the same with their universities
or colleges, or are we especially disliked by Apple? (Must be us, they
downrated us from a HEPP I to a HEPP II a few years ago. :-( )
Have other state institutions had to forfeit their Apple contracts
as well?
I would appreciate any information that can be supplied to me. I
would like to do what I can to perserve our Apple contract (although
I do admit that this may be a lost cause.)

Subject: BinHex 5.0?
Could somebody please explain why BinHex 5.0 has been on the
info-mac archive for about a year now, yet BinHex 4.0 seems to
be the 'standard' used by netters (myself included)?
Until today, I didn't even realize version 5.0 existed. I found
it at info-mac, downloaded it, converted it (even IT is in v4.0
format), and tried a few things with it. It appears that:
* v5.0 creates smaller files than v4.0
* v5.0 can convert v4.0 files
* v4.0 cannot convert v5.0 files
* Stuffit doesn't recognize v5.0 files
* v5.0 files are less 'structured' than v4.0 files (this is
just my impression from opening them in BBEdit, and seeing
variable line lengths and no identifiable header line).
Should I be using v5.0? Is that what everybody else is using?
Any info would be appreciated.

Hi you all,
It's still not working :=) Here's what I have done so far:
1. Check/replace the AppleTalk connectors;
2. Re-plug all the connections;
3. Print a self-test page;
4. Run the Namer;
5. Replace the DW driver (with 4.0);
6. Turn the AppleTalk on/off a few times;
7. Hit and shake and ... the printer, without using a hammer...
Anyway, the printer still does not show up on the Chooser window. Again
I have been using this printer for two years with both System 6.0.7 and
System 7.1. Everything was OK and it suddenly quit working. The error light
does not blink except when I replug the appletalk connector to the printer.
Sincere thanks go to Petter Gughes, Mike Dustan, and Michel Lewinger. But
I still need more advices. Please help!

I have not had any crashes on my C/650 & 14" display but twice over the past

Subject: Ethernet-SCSI-adapters and MacTCP compatibility (Q)
Hi,
I want to connect a soon to be purchased PowerBook (160 or 165) to our
department's Ethernet (thin coax cable) using one of the available Ethernet
adapters which attach to the PowerBook's SCSI interface. In addition to
EtherTalk full support for TCP/IP protocols is required, e.g., MacTCP-based
applications like Fetch, Eudora, NCSA Telnet should run without quirks.
Since I am seeking a solution for a single computer only (all of our other
Mac's and the LaserWriter are already on Ethernet proper) a FastPath or a
GatorBox is not an option in this case.
I would appreciate hearing from people who have had good or bad experiences
with any particular SCSI-Ethernet-devices (e.g., Asante EN/SC or Dayna
SCSI/Link 3 PB). The important issue here is MacTCP compatibility.
If there is sufficient interest I will summarize the results.

Constantin Kahn

Subject: How to connect 2 LC III's to both modem and Grayshare printer (Q)
[to my many net friends. I haven't fallen off the face of the Earth, but
I have gone through a major change in lifestyle that's stolen most of the
time I might devote to replying to mail :-( I have been 'lurking' and
most of the time am able to reply to mail addressed directly to me - MAS]
Last week I dropped my (freshman) daughter off at college. We got a
good educational price on an LC III and Personal LaserWriter 300. Her
roommate is also getting an LC III. Kathy and her roommate can share
her (lamentably, serial :( ) printer (Grayshare) by connecting the printer
to her modem port and the roommates computer to AppleTalk.
Problem! How to connect a modem??? Actually, BOTH girls would like to
be able to use the modem. There's only one phone line, so only one can
use the modem at a time.
One option is to connect the modem to the roommate's computer and buy
(what's the name??) modem sharing software, but I'm concerned about the
effect on CPU cycles in the instance where: Kathy is 'sharing' the 14.4K
modem and her roommate prints something (sharing Kathy's printer).
I know AppleTalk is sophisticated enough to make that double sharing
possible, but I wonder how serious a performance hit will occur.
The alternative would be one or more serial switch boxes that would connect
the modem to one computer and the printer to the other. Put Grayshare
on both computers and the end result *should* be printing always works,
and whover is using the modem doesn't put a load on the other's LC III.
Does anyone know of an appropriate switch box (a source of same also would
be appreciated)? Surely, my daughter and her roommate are not the first
to experience this problem. Is there, for example an expansion card for
the LC III that will supply an additional serial port (that the modem or
the printer can find??) Perhaps the expansion card would throw in an FPU??

Help,
I am almost finished with my database program, and the boss tosses a
live one in my lap. He is a windows person, and wants this elaborate
installer like the one he and his partner wrote for the windows version.
The installer ...in his words..MUST check to see if there is enough HD space
to do the entire install, check to see if the system version is compatible,
check to see what type of machine the end-user is using, check to see if
they are using a color machine, see if there is enough ram, and a few other
assorted things that was available in a package called "Install Shield."
Is there such an animal for the mac, and if so, where do I get it, and
what is the learning curve? Will the Apple installer do this? Shareware?

West Texas. One of my schools has a lab of 18 Mac LC 520's. They have
been having some problems and I was wondering if other people were having
the same problem.
Two Macs failed to boot (disk with question mark), we had to
reinstall System Software, incidentally Disinfectant 3.2 showed a damaged
System file on one of them. I assume that this was caused by a student
switching off with the rear switch and not going through an orderly
shutdown with Special - Shutdown. This is because while I was in the lab
doing some other work, one Mac would not boot, we had to turn on the
rear switch, not the power up switch on the keyboard.
Two of the other Macs would not boot nor read a floppy, would not
even spin up the floppy or at least hang on the Happy Mac. This failure to
read the floppy made me suspect a Parameter RAM problem. Zapping the PRAM
solved the problem. If this was only one machine it would be a fluke,
but two machines out of 18 makes me suspect a bigger problem.
Has anyone had similar problems? Is there a problem with the LC
520 or is this a student or lab teacher problem? They are now making sure
that they use Special - Shutdown, but the problem with the PRAM is
elusive. The teacher is fairly new to Macs, but learning.
Please respond to me directly. If there are enough responses and
worthwhile info, I will summarize and post. TIA

The professor can still issue a ".openwin-init" command. I moved my
non-OpenWindows specific commands (e.g. xinit) to a ".Xdo" file.
My .openwin-init calls .Xdo, as does my .xsession. This way, I get
the same environment when I'm logging in on my Mac, a random X-
terminal, or the Sun console.

I just created a file which contained a series of SETENV (including PATHs)
commands, and then executed them from within MacX with
source myfile;/usr/bin/openwin -single
or whatever. I guess you could source the files directly, but I ran into some
problems doing this when files tried to call to the local screen. Maybe you
could set the DISPLAY first to the Mac screen....

Subject: Making a secure folder (Q)
Greetings from sunny Sheffield ...!
Is there any free/cheapo utility which provides simple password protection
to the contents of a folder?
I'm about to start sharing the LCII in my university office with a graduate
student who is going to come in one afternoon a week to help out with the
adminstration of ANALYSIS. I use the machine for some departmental business
as well as for the journal, so there will also be confidential letters,
draft exam papers, that sort of thing, on the disk. And what I'd like is
just a secure folder to put them, whose contents cannot be accessed without
a password. This doesn't have to provide Fort Knox levels of security, and
I don't want to have to go to the bother of encrypting. (It's as much a
matter of making the student feel comfortable with the situation, and also
stopping opportunistic snooping by someone dropping into my room while I'm
out for coffee, etc.)
All suggestions gratefully received. (The machine is connected to a network
server, and I've a password-protected filestore on that. Am I being
neurotic in not feeling happy about leaving sensitive material on that?)
Replies to me, and I'll summarize to the net.

Subject: Microsoft Word or Nisus?
Charlie Roth in IM-178 seemed to think that Nisus was not as good as Word
with regards long documents, since Nisus keeps all of the file in RAM
whereas Word doesn't.
This may be true, but Word also chokes on very long documents, and when you
have to split a Word document, you can't do multiple-file global search and
replace like you can with Nisus. Charlie had obviously not taken advantage
of Nisus's Files monitor (or whatever its called) which allows you to simply
click on a file or files out of a directory list to include them in your
search-and-replace. These connections can be permanently associated with
your document.
Add this to the PowerSEARCH of Nisus, and you have something that you cannot
duplicate in Word (for Mac OR Windows).

Dear fellow netters
We have got a 3-disk Monotype(R) ValuePack(TM) set of fonts. The first disk

It was produced by Aladdin Systems. It unstuffs a number of fonts and then

Since Nisus can search and replace in all open documents or in a selected
list of closed documents, this isn't really much of a problem. I just
wrote a book in Nisus, but I had to convert it to Word to submit to
my publisher, and I couldn't believe how difficult it was to do some
things in Word. Inflexible and buggy search and replace, no true Ignore
in the spelling checker, mega slow word count, slow saving with tables
in the document, ugh.
Frankly, creating a single document for a book is a dangerous proposition,
and I would strongly recommend you don't do it in any program. All
program slow down and become flakier when you start stretching the
limits of what they can handle.

You must have some major pictures in that document. I give Nisus 2
MB, and I can open almost all the chapters in my book (somewhere around
1.3 MB of text - I haven't checked specifically) before I run out
of memory, but all the screen shots are separate and will be put in
during the layout phase in PageMaker by my publisher.
The RAM method has some advantages other than speed. Since Nisus will
use all the RAM you can give it (well, all that I've been able to
give it when working with 1.6 MB files), you can open larger files
and do more to them than in Word, since Word won't use more than the
first 4 MB or so that you give it no matter what. More RAM after that
point (which may be higher, I haven't tested specifically) makes no
difference to Word.

Putting together an entirely new voice is a non-trivial process. Apple does
not document the voice table format because it is subject to change in
future versions of PlainTalk (so I've been told) and they don't have the
resources to support outside developers.
I suppose if enough people/developers want to generate their own voice
tables, and are willing to pay for the tools to do it, Apple could
dedicate resources to it. However since it is a VERY complicated
process, subject to change, and not something the general public is
going to do, I wouldn't expect to see it soon. At least not until the
process is MUCH easier.
Perhaps some day you will be able to "talk" to your Mac, let it process your
voice, and then have it talk back to you in your own voice.

Subject: QuickDraw fills/shading!?
Hi, all!
It's been a while since I've posted here, but something's been
bothering me:
I recently bought a SWII (*Wonderful* machines, and *much* faster
and nicer than my old ImageWriter! Cheap, too...), and noticed
something:
Why is it that one can't make nice, smooth, device-optimized fills
and shading with QuickDraw? If, for example, in Word5, I ask to have a
paragraph shaded (Such as a cell in a table, for example), the shading
that gets printed is the same cheap-looking, 72dpi pattern that appears
on my screen. For example, if I shade a title cell in a table by 25%,
I get the coarse, tightly-spaced but large-sized dots exactly like on
my screen when I print.
I noticed that when printing color images on my SWII in Greyscale
mode, the printer produces nice smooth grey tones, so I know it's pos-
sible. Why can't I specify, for example, 10% shading and have the SWII
print it in this way? I've managed to get very attractive shaded *text*
out of my SWII by making text different colors (Red is fairly dark,
yellow is very light when printed), but I still want to be able to
shade paragraphs and cells properly.
Can anyone offer any insight? Hasn't anyone ever run into this? For
the record, I'm running Sys7.1 on an SE/30 5/40 (I know, I know; I'm
saving my money for a PowerPC). 32-bit QD is standard, so I don't think
that could be the problem...

Subject: Quick Time and Darkside questions
Howdy all, I have a couple of questions regarding Quick Time and Darkside of
the Mac. My system is a IIsi with 5 meg RAM and an 80 meg HD.
I have just recently installed a Startup Movie in my system folder, and was
suprised to find out that with this little addition, Quick Time now loads
fully
into memory at the start (~200K) and not in its dormant state (~50K). Also
it doesn't want to give up that extra 150K after it finished the movie. My
question is, is there anyway to get QT to play the startup movie and then
return to only occupying 50K of RAM? I have the most recent version of
Quick Time (but I seem to have forgotten the version number).
My second question has to do with the most recent version of Darkside of the
Mac. I have version 3.2 installed. I tried to install version 4.2(?) and
whenever I tried to open a fader it gave me the message "Cannot open fader
because it has not been updated to version 4.0". I thought this might have
something to do with the prefs file, so I trashed it and then ran the newer
version, setting up the prefs file for that version. I even dragged the whole
folder containg the older version with its fader files into the trash before
running the newer version. None of this worked. Has anyone else experienced
this problem? Did anyone find a solution?

I noticed in the last Infomac Digest the following question:
> Do you know if there is a way to "mark" a place in the text and have a
> page number reference to that place somewhere else, where Word itself
> keeps track of any change of page of the mark.
With due respect to the earlier respondent, the answer to this question
is YES. Not an enthusiastic yes, but a yes nonetheless.
If you insert the "page number" glossary in the cutline or description
beneath a figure or table on a given page, select it & copy it, then use
"paste special" to paste it elsewhere in the document where you want it,
you will get a live link between that page number and the reference to it
somewhere else. If the figure or table moves to a different page, the
reference to it elsewhere will automatically be updated.
This works: I've used it. I have also had occasional problems with files
that had lots of these links in them, so I would recommend caution, and
be sure you keep important files backed up constantly.
I do hope that Word 6 (about which rumors are starting to be spread) will
include some simpler and more reliable way of keeping track of figures &
tables, or of page cross-references. But in the meantime, try this.

to get "Page x of y" to work right, and the same trick can work here:
Insert the page number glossary item at the reference point and then change
its type to hidden text so it won't be printed (you might want to show

place where you want to make the reference. Cool, eh? (<-- obligatory

Ditto with EndNote Plus.
Since the DOS/Windoze versions of Word have supported in-text reference points
for some time now, and given the hubbub about future Windows and Mac versions
sharing tons'o'code and features (I will believe it when I see it!), perhaps
relief is in sight with Mac Word version 6. Unfortunately, this is a tragic
example of a product originally developed on the Mac getting more attention on
Windoze.

Yes, I have a venerable Mac II, and it's finally beginning to show its

I'd say it's been crashing about every five minutes of regular use (going
in and out of applications, and generally screwing around) but much less
frequently while engaging in only one application that isn't too stren-
ouos. I think it may be my SCSI chain. I have a DAT drive hooked up right

it's terminated correctly. What sort of problems can bad cables yield?
Anything like this? Right now, I can't even run Retrospect after a shift

The only other thing that I can think of is the fact that I had an accel-

this a few times, and maybe I screwed something up in there. If anyone
has any ideas (stress on the any) please email me. Also, things become
corrupt on my computer all the time, usually Stuffit archives or diskcopy

Does anybody know how to do this?
I don't mind ResEditing, if that is what it takes, and I have thrown away
Finder Help (the prefs file). In other words, I would like SuperClock to
appear where the help menu icon appears now on applications with menus that go
right up to the help menu.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
ABRODY@VAX.CLARKU.EDU
P.S. I am
still hunting for a screen shrinking software that will make 640 x 480
software appear (with less pixels) on my 512 x 384 12" RGB - 256 Color
Monitor. Any clues? FTP, Gopher, Telnet are all possible paths from the VAX
account here. There is also a Fetch client here on campus. Thank you again.

All the response pointed out it's because the 040 machine, especially the
instruction caches. I got three different options:
(1) Turn off the caches. It works with Excel 3.0, but not SuperPaint 2.0.
(2) Get SuperPaint 2.0a and Excel 3.0a (bug fix) from the manufacturer for
free.
(3) Update the software to current version, Excel 4.0 and SuperPaint 3.5.
I would like to thank the following people for their help. The list would
not include response after 3:00 CST.

The first and easiest fix is to turn off the processor cache on the
Centris. You need the Cache Control control panel, which, if not
already installed, should be on the 7.1 Tidbits disk. There are two
buttons in this control panel: "Faster" and "More Compatible". Click
"More Compatible" and then restart the Centris. This should clear up
the Excel problem, and may also help with SuperPaint. (I'm told that
the compatibility problem is fixed in Excel 3.0a and 4.0).
If the SuperPaint problem persists, there's one more thing to try
before upgrading to the current version (3.5): You can try changing
the SuperPaint preferences so that "Use only QuickDraw for screen
rendering" is checked (this is under Miscellaneous Settings). How can
you do this if the application crashes on startup? You make the
change on your Mac II, then copy the SuperPaint Prefs file (in the SP
Pouch folder) to a floppy and bring it to the Centris.

Someone will doubtless correct me, but I don't believe you can run a
Centris with System 7.0.

Mitch

I regularly use Excel 3.0 with Sysytem 7.1 and have experienced no similar
problems. However, SuperPaint is another story. I had the same problems you
describe, and finally had to upgrade to SuperPaint 3.0 (which, IMHO, is a much
less pleasant program to work with--it's S..L..O..W; I don't know what they
did
to it in the upgrade, but they certainly bent, if not broke, it!)
(I'm using a IIfx, so maybe the Centris hardware has something to do with
it....)

Subject: URGENT ADB KEYBOARD PROBLEMS! HELP!
Help!
I packaged my Extended keyboard II carefully in a suitcase, surrounded by
lots of nice soft clothes, and now when I have reconnected the beastie
to my Mac, it reads that the control key is being kept down on the
keyboard. This is *not* so!
Using Keycaps, I can see that all the other keys work fine, 'cept for that
one darn key...this is very very VERY aggravating, since I cannot type
anything
with that key held down. I need some help, any help! I would be willing
to open up the keyboard to examine switches if someone would show me
how to do such a thing....but whatever happens, if you know how to help me,
please, please tell me what I can do, other than waiting for Apple
techies to tell me that 'oh, the keyboard needs replacing', since I do
*not* have that type of Ca$h at the moment!
Please help!

Greetings!
I have several loosely related questions and I apologize in advance if they
are too numerous for a single posting. Kindly send all replies to
p00203@psilink.com.
1) I would like to find out and obtain software that would allow my Mac to
communicate with Internet better. Currently I am connected via a service
provided by PSI (Precision Systems, Inc.). As front end SW I am using
Worldlink program from Intercon, Inc. Unfortunately, this program has many
limitations, the most notable one is that it does not provide a mechanism for
reading/writing Usenet News.
1.1) Are there better programs? Freeware or shareware would be preferable, as
my funds are limited, but commercial products are of interest also.
1.2) If there are such programs available, could someone mail me one (I
believe that Worldlink can correctly decode an encoded binary)?
2) I read in the latest info-mac digest a mention of BINHEX program. Is this
a standard way to encode/decode binaries sent over Internet mail (similar to
uuencode, uudecode for Unix)? If so, how can I obtain it?
3) I am involved in producing a Russian-language journal and would be
interested in getting in touch with anyone who has experience with using Mac
with Cyrillic (i.e. Russian). I am interested in finding out (and in return
sharing what little knowledge I have in this area) about tools available
(word processors, spell checkers, fonts, etc.).
3.1) I am interested in finding a program that would allow me to read
messages posted to usenet newsgroups (such as relcom.*) in Cyrillic. I
imagine that most of these messages are posted by people using DOS PCs. In
Russia there are many drivers that convert extended ASCII characters to
Cyrillic letters. Thus the postings appear as "garbage" full of strange
graphics characters to anyone on IBM PC who does not have the driver. (I
haven't figured out how these would appear on the Mac, as I can't get to net
news from the Mac yet -- see item 1 -- but I think that the message would
look like a dump of a binary file). A pointer to any solution would be
greatly appreciated. If there are any Russian language Mac users reading this
I would appreciate your advice.
Thanks for the help, it's greatly appreciated.

Hello. I can't get my Mac to work with the Telebit Worldblazer modem, though
I managed to get the modem to work with Sun Workstation and DOS PC/AT. The
modem just does not seem to respond (even when I use Kermit to issue "AT"
commands directly). However, my Mac works with a Hays Personal Modem 2400
(which comes with it's own cable attached). This, I think, eliminates
hardware problems with the Mac and the modem. Thus the only remaining
variables are: cable and Worldblazer settings. Do I need some kind of a
special cable? If Worldblazer register settings are wrong, how do I reset
them if it does not respond to anything?
Thanks, Victor Muslin
